Houses lack right insurance cover

Wed, 06 Apr 2005

Half of Britain's homeowners are either underinsured or have no insurance, according to an insurance provider.

In a study carried out AA Insurance, 25 per cent of householders polled did not have any contents cover while two-thirds were underinsured.

Kevin Sinclair, director of AA Insurance, says that most home insurances are renewed in the spring and therefore this is the period when all householders must ensure that they are properly and adequately covered.

"People often arrange their cover when they take out a mortgage- and then simply forget it. It's only when they make a claim that they may find their cover is inadequate."

The insurance provider suggests that individuals correctly value their contents so as to avoid underinsuring their contents.

It encouraged taking out a building cover with no limit to building costs so as to include rebuilding costs such as a new conservatory or kitchen.

AA Insurance believes that currently home insurance represents better value than ever.

The average cost of contents insurance has risen by only five per cent over the past ten years, while buildings cover rose by just one per cent in the same period, according to AA's British Insurance Premium Index.
