Cheap travel insurance must provide medical cover

Mon, 22 Aug 2005

The travel insurance industry can expect to receive nearly a quarter of a million claims for medical or hospital care this year according to Sainsbury's Bank.

The findings highlight the importance of travel medical insurance as the bank claims that many cheap travel insurance customers may not be able to claim when a medical disaster strikes.

Commenting on the data, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury’s Bank, Robert O’May said: "The excitement of going on holiday means that people can sometimes forget to organise adequate travel insurance for themselves and their families.

"Good cover is essential for those travelling abroad whether it's for a short break, fortnight's holiday or a longer trip, so that if problems do occur, the impact can hopefully be kept to a minimum, allowing you to continue to enjoy your holiday."

The bank's study revealed that after medical claims cancellation, travel delay and stolen money or baggage were the next most common reasons for trip insurance claims.
