Speeders could pay more car insurance

Fri, 12 Aug 2005

An online driving simulator deducted that drivers who plan their holiday journeys properly are less likely to speed.

The simulator, created by Marks & Spencer car insurance, revealed that seven in ten speeding offences were committed in areas where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour.

Of these, 60 per cent drove faster than 40 miles per hour.

Men between the ages of 25 and 34 showed the riskiest behaviour when it came to speeding. Women aged between 35 and 44 were the ones most likely to observe the speed limit, and were also the group who usually planned their route with the help of a map.

"People speed because they are in a hurry due to the pressures of modern life, for example ferrying the kids around while trying to get to work on time," commented David Lewis, a consultant psychologist for M&S car insurance.

M&S car insurance chief Peter Longstaff said the simulator was designed so drivers could test their awareness of everyday hazards and warning signs.

He warned that it is in everyone's interest to drive safely. He pointed out that speeders, in particular repeat offenders, not only run the risk of causing accidents but also of having to pay more for their car insurance.
