New pet insurance products have been launched by esure.
The insurance company has introduced a standard pet insurance product and a more comprehensive pet insurance policy called esure Pet Plus.
With monthly premiums starting at £3.50 for cats and £3.85 for dogs, it means that for the price of a novelty squeaky toy or pet mince pies, pets will get insurance cover of up to £6,500 for treatment by a vet, esure points out.
Pets are pampered during Christmas, according to research by ICM. It found that ten per cent of dog owners will splash out on their pooches, as they plan to spend more than £30 on festive outfits and toys for them.
However, only four per cent of dog owners and two per cent of those with cats will be taking out pet insurance for their animals this Christmas.
The insurance company says that pet owners should consider giving their furry friends a gift that's not only for Christmas, but for life.
"Instead of a squeaky snowman bone or novelty jingle bell collar that will be used a few times and put away to gather dust for the rest of the year, a more worthwhile stocking filler for a beloved pooch or moggie this Christmas would be pet insurance," says Jacky Brown, the head of pet insurance at the insurance company.
Pet insurance is pets' equivalent of private health insurance, she adds, so it is important to find a comprehensive product that offers value for money.
She says pet owners should check the small print on pet insurance deals to see what is covered for and how easy it is to make an insurance claim.
