Travel insurance essential for mini breaks, American Express warns

Fri, 17 Jun 2005

With summer being beckoned closer by sunny weather predicted for the weekend, many Britons would start planning mini breaks to sunny shores for some fun in the sun over the next few months.

But American Express Travel Insurance is urging everyone to ensure their travel insurance gives adequate cover on mini breaks.

Market research company Mintel predicts an increase of 36 per cent by 2009 in mini break travel. American Express Travel Insurance warns that proper travel insurance cover is even more essential on mini breaks.

Good travel insurance cover could help to minimise the adverse effects of the three top claims: delay in travel, lost luggage and medical expenses.

In a case of travel delay, American Express Travel Insurance starts paying out travel insurance cover after just six hours delay. A delay of more than twelve hours, which ruins any weekend getaway, results in travel insurance paying out the full cost of the holiday.

American Express Travel Insurance covers travellers with up to £200 for buying essential items at the airport when luggage is delayed by more than six hours on the outward journey.

Medical insurance as part of a travel insurance package is essential, even though the new European Health Insurance Card entitles holders to free or reduced state provided medical care in most European countries.

American Express Travel Insurance warns however that this is not medical insurance and would not for example cover repatriation costs.

Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express Travel Insurance says: "It's easy to overlook or not bother taking out travel insurance when only going away for a few days.

"However it is just as important to protect yourself and family on a mini break as for a main holiday. Good cover can make unforeseen disruptions much easier to bear and provide vital peace of mind," she added.

American Express travel insurance is widely available, even in the last minute at the airport or port prior to departure. Travel insurance policies automatically cover any UK holiday of more than one night's pre-booked accommodation.
