American Express Travel Insurance is warning Britons embarking on a gap year to take extra care with regards to travel insurance for this purpose.
With 2005 named the Year of the Volunteer, the travel insurance provider suggested that traditional travel insurance policies might not provide adequate cover for gap years.
The travel insurer also produced some helpful hints for people planning a break from careers or full time education.
Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express insurance services, said they have seen a rise in extended travel insurance policies over the last year.
American Express pointed out that while unpaid work overseas generally had no adverse affect on travel insurance cover, volunteers must be clear about the sort of work they are lining up.
The travel insurer highlights that a programme centring on turtle conservation in Mexico, for example, would require additional travel insurance as it involves using a quad bike on a daily basis and would therefore require special sports cover.
American Express adds that if any of the work is paid, then general travel insurance does not offer medical insurance for a work related accident.
The company has produced some tips for people choosing travel insurance to cover extended stays abroad, explaining that consumers ensure their policy covers every country in itinerary.
In addition, it advises people to check that the travel insurance policy lasts the entire length of the trip and to remember to read the small print before leaving.
