Winter sports enthusiasts are being warned to ensure they have adequate travel insurance in place before taking to the slopes.
Of Britain's 1.2 million skiing and snowboarding fanatics, 14 per cent embark on their snow-filled holidays without taking out comprehensive travel insurance, Bradford & Bingley found.
Broken legs and injured knee ligaments accounted for 30 per cent of medical assistance insurance claims during last year's winter sports season.
Insurance claims that covered mountain rescue, treatment, surgery and airfares home amounted to thousands of pounds.
Medical assistance in the United States was the most costly, with treatment bills rising to £20,000 and airfares costing up to £4,000.
"Should the worst happen and you're not covered by a winter sports travel insurance policy, a hefty medical bill could swallow up any savings you make and leave you seriously out of pocket," warns Dave Foyle, head of general insurance at Bradford & Bingley.
Because different insurance companies offer various policies, travellers are advised to check their insurance policies carefully so they know whether they have the right insurance cover for all their planned winter sports activities.
"With the right insurance cover in place, holidaymakers will be able to enjoy their winter sports safe in the knowledge that should anything happen they will be properly taken care of," Mr Foyle concludes.
