Massive vet bills that many pet owner can not afford is forcing owners to have their pets down. This shocking news has been was revealed by Direct Line Pet Insurance.
Research showed that over one fifth of dog owners, who took part in the survey, admitted they would have to take such action because they could not afford the treatment.
A spokesperson for Direct Line Pet Insurance said: "With no NHS for animals, dog owners make great financial sacrifices to protect the health of their pets.
"As vets rarely display prices, many dog owners don't know the full cost of treatment until after it has been carried out, which can cause real problems, particularly for more than 85 per cent of pet owners who are not insured."
Every year UK dog owners spend more than £800 million on medical treatment for their dogs. The average cost being £154.
Some 15 per cent of pet owners have had to go into their savings to pay for treatment and six per cent ended up in financial difficulty after they had borrowed money for treatment.
Pet insurance from Direct Line for cats costs £5 and £7 for dogs on a monthly basis. Anyone who applies online will get a discount of five per cent.
