Gadgets pose home contents insurance risk

Britons walking around with mobile phones and iPods fear theft, a leading insurance provider found in research.

A quarter of us fear that we are "walking targets" for theft, as we carry an average of £200 worth of valuables around on a daily basis, Lloyds TSB Insurance found.

With one in ten of those between the ages of 16 and 24 carrying up to £400 worth of possessions with them, this is the group most prone to, and fearful of, become victims of theft.

This fear is "unsurprising" says the insurance provider's managing director, Phil Loney.

"As gadgets get smaller we're squeezing ever more expensive items into our pockets and handbags," he says, increasing the need for extended home contents insurance.

London seems to be the favoured location for thieves, as a third of the capital feel they are at risk of being robbed of their valuables.

Mr Loney suggests that people take precautions against crime, like ensuring that expensive belongings are hidden away from thieves' eyes.

"But beyond that it is important to check these items are insured," Mr Loney urges.

He says extended home contents insurance is needed to cover Britons in case they become the victims of theft.
