Pet insurance necessary, Tesco says

Thu, 27 Oct 2005

Pet owners are being warned to ensure they have adequate pet insurance in place.

Tesco is urging pet owners to be extra cautious when they walk their dogs during the darker winter evenings, as motorists could fail to see dogs and cause accidents.

Should a pet that is not covered by pet insurance cause an accident or injury, the owner will be held personally liable for any resulting claims following law changes in the last few years.

But, says Allan Burns, head of Tesco Pet Insurance, many dog owners still seem unaware of the implications of uninsured pets.

He explains that these law changes mean that without adequate pet insurance, pet owners might have to dig deep into their own pockets when they are faced with third party insurance claims.

Over the last 12 months, Tesco Pet Insurance has seen an increase of 25 per cent in personal injury claims. These insurance claims are now an average eight times higher than insurance claims for vet fees.

The highest insurance claim the pet insurance provider received was for over £40,000, for a dog that collided with a motorbike.

"All dog owners should consider pet insurance as even well trained dogs can be unpredictable in their behaviour," warns Mr Burns.

He adds that pet insurance does not have to be expensive, as it is all about shopping around for the right type of insurance cover at the right price.
