The majority of holidaymakers are still opting for single trip travel insurance despite the fact that they are taking more and more foreign holidays, reveals new research.
Many travellers could be better advised to take out an annual travel insurance policy to cover all their mini-breaks and longer holidays taken during the year, suggests the insurance company More Than.
According to government figures, UK sun seekers are taking over 60 million trips abroad. Yet a recent survey by Datamonitor revealed that almost three-quarters of all travel insurance policies are still only valid for single trips.
This means that approximately three out of four people are still paying out for single trip travel insurance, costing consumers over £330 million every year.
Holiday-makers could also be losing out if they always opt to book travel insurance policies through their tour operator or travel agents.
According to Graham Hollebon from More Than, almost half of all travel insurance polices are booked through a travel agent when the consumer could sometimes be better advised to book via an independent insurance company.
However, above all he urges frequent travellers to always ensure they have adequate travel insurance before they pack their bags and catch their flight.
"It's not pleasant to have to sleep in an airport if you miss your flight, wear the same clothes for three days while you wait for your bag to turn up, or worry about the increasingly expensive cost of treatment should you end up in a foreign hospital," he warned holidaymakers.
