Travel insurance needed for top Easter destinations

Tue, 11 Apr 2006

Easter sun-seekers will need to take out travel insurance when jetting off to their favourite Spring destinations, which this year include the Canary Islands, Spain, Egypt and Morocco.

With over two million people heading off to enjoy an Easter break abroad in the next few days, travellers should ensure they've sorted out their travel insurance before boarding the plane, urge experts from the online insurance comparison website, insuresupermarket.

Richard Mason from the online insurance provider says there are still too many people who don't bother to take out an adequate travel insurance policy.

He says this could be due to holiday-makers getting confused about the range of travel insurance policies and often can't be bothered with the hassle.

To assist overwhelmed travellers, he advises that holiday-makers follow a short checklist of key things to consider when choosing a travel insurance policy.

Most importantly, he urges travellers to take note of their own health and whether they are suffering from any pre-existing medical conditions that could affect their insurance policy.

They also need to think about what they intend to do on holiday. Dangerous sports or winter sports will need additional cover.

Travellers also need to double check the small print to see what conditions are applied to any claim they make. For example, a policy may require that you keep your valuables in a safe place as defined by the insurance policy in order to get any compensation.

Also, holiday-makers need to think about their destination. Recent changes in European legislation mean that all travellers should now pack a European Health Insurance Card, which will reduce your medical bills. However, it may not cover all treatments needed and a travel insurance policy is still required.

For further flung places it is also worth checking how safe the country is to travel in, ensuring you are aware of the possible risks or dangers you may face. It can be a good idea to get the latest up-to-date information from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.
