Amex advice for travel insurance

Fri, 04 Aug 2006

Travel insurance is the "best gift" a UK holidaymaker can give to their family, according to an expert.

With a large number of travel insurance policies, UK residents should also be careful to be aware of exactly what they are covered for, American Express (Amex) warns.

Furthermore, one in seven holidaymakers are "at risk" by not taking out a travel insurance policy, the company states.

Joanne Field, marketing manager of Amex insurance services, commented: "Even when holidaymakers have insurance, 35 per cent do not read the terms and conditions of their policy before they go away.

"There are over 450 travel insurance policies on the market and it is as important to understand what you are covered for as well as what you are not covered for before the holiday begins."

Ms Field cites the holidays to the US, as medical treatments for any injury or accident suffered could cost thousands of dollars, which is likely to result in a large travel insurance claim.

These remarks echo those of swiftcover, which recently warned that 2.5 million UK holidaymakers do not take out travel insurance policies.
