The Association of British Insurers has launched a new information guide on life insurance and HIV, designed specifically for gay men.
Launched to coincide with World Aids day on December 1st 2006, the new information aims to dispel myths surrounding life insurance applications for gay men.
The guide deals with the industry's methods of dealing with sexuality with regards to life insurance policies.
Richard Walsh, head of health insurance at the Association of British Insurers, explains: "Insurers now have strict guidance to ensure that only relevant information is taken into account when determining premiums and levels of cover.
"Application forms no longer ask questions about sexuality."
Additionally, Mr Walsh notes that taking a HIV test will not have an impact upon applications for life insurance.
Chris Morgan, a member of the Association of British Insurers expert working group on HIV and insurance and managing director of Compass IFA added that the new guide could help to remove discrimination in the life insurance industry.
According to a BBC report, one-third of gay men with the HIV virus could be unaware that they have the virus.
