Winter sports enthusiasts beware, says travel insurance company

Skiers could be skating on thin ice if they hit the slopes without adequate travel insurance, American Express Travel Insurance warns.

The travel insurance company urges those inspired by the Olympics this month to take up skiing that they should ensure their travel insurance covers them for winter sports.

"It's easy to get carried away and pick up incredible speeds on the slopes without considering the consequences," says the marketing manager at American Express Travel Insurance, Joanne Field.

But she warns that these risks are particularly worrying if these people set off on their holidays without comprehensive travel insurance that includes winter sports cover.

Of the hundreds of thousands of Britons who go on ski holidays every year, ten per cent suffer an injury on their vacation, the travel insurance company found.

Beginners are up to four times more likely to be injured and women and children also run a higher risk of injury, according to American Express Travel Insurance.

Winter sports enthusiasts are also being warned that the new European health insurance card (EHIC) should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.

American Express Travel Insurance offers winter sports cover as an optional extra with its classic annual travel insurance policy for £10 per person or £25 for a family.
