A leading insurance provider is urging pet owners to help their companions shed any extra Christmas pounds that might have been piled on over the festive season.
In a survey by Halifax Pet Insurance, 38 per cent of people said that their pet put on weight over the festive season.
However, only 13 per cent of those surveyed by the insurance provider said that they would help their pet get back into shape in the new year.
Meanwhile, Halifax Pet Insurance also found that the problem of overweight pets was a problem across the UK in general, with some 33 per cent of pets seen by vets classed as obese.
Francis Wright of Halifax Pet Insurance said: "If pet owners make one resolution this year, Halifax Pet Insurance hopes they resolve to find out the ideal weight of their pets and take measures to keep them in shape all year around."
She went on to say that this was important for both the wellbeing of the pet and the owner, as overweight pets were more likely to develop long-term illnesses.
The insurance provider pointed out that this could lead to costly treatments, which could make a dent in the savings of those without pet insurance.
Top tips for keeping animals in shape include playing with pets and taking them for regular walks, advises Halifax Pet Insurance.
