Many UK residents rush into buying travel insurance, without considering the necessary level of cover, an expert has warned.
Brits often buy their travel insurance on a basis of price, without weighing up the potential cost of uncovered items, warns RIAS.
RIAS, which provides travel insurance for over 50s in the UK, states that considerations such as pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation terms and inappropriate levels of health insurance could all cause extra costs to build up.
Furthermore, the company offers advice such as ensuring a travel insurance provider has English speaking call centres in your destination and checking that your personal belongings are covered on a home insurance policy.
Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, comments: "Travel insurance, particularly for the over 50s, should very much be viewed as an essential purchase in a similar way to arranging your currency.
"This is particularly the case with travel insurance for the over 50s as there is often the important consideration of pre-existing medical conditions."
RIAS has over 800,000 home insurance, car insurance and travel insurance customers in the UK.
