More than £2.7 billion worth of items have been stolen from British holidaymakers in the last five years, according to a travel insurance provider.
Some 7.2 million UK residents have had their belongings taken, the figures from Halifax travel insurance show.
Furthermore, more than half of the items (£1.5 billion) that were taken were not covered by a travel insurance policy, according to the research.
Paul Birkhead, Halifax travel insurance, commented: "There is usually very little authorities abroad can do to recover your stolen items, especially in holiday resorts where it's easy for a thief to blend in with the crowd.
"With recovery unlikely victims must ensure they obtain a crime number or report from the police - without it they will be unable to claim for their loss."
The survey also showed that a quarter of UK residents said that the experience of theft had spoilt their holiday, while one-in-ten would not return to the country in question.
However, it could be home insurance policies as well as travel insurance that see a rise in claims, as recent research from More Than states that more high-value gadgets are being taken in UK street crime.
