Around 2.5 million UK residents will put themselves "at risk" by taking a break without travel insurance, an expert has warned.
These risks are generated by "ignorance", cost and a false sense of security surrounding travel insurance, claims swiftcover.
Many UK residents believe they are covered by their home insurance or banking policy, the company states, with 21 per cent stating that travel insurance is unnecessary for this reason.
Furthermore, some 13 per cent of UK residents believe that the European Health Insurance Card will provide adequate cover, forestalling the need for travel insurance.
Swiftcover also states that an "I don't think I am likely to claim" attitude is putting 8.5 million Brits at risk, as they head abroad without travel insurance believing that no accidents will happen.
Cost is a factor for 15 per cent of UK travellers, who believe that the price of travel insurance is too high.
Finally, eight per cent of UK holidaymakers state that they forget to take out a travel insurance policy.
Recent research from Sainsbury's Bank indicated that more than four million UK residents have had to cancel a holiday, for which many are unaware that travel insurance would cover the cost.
