Many Brits could be using bicycles that are not covered by home insurance, according to experts.
The national cycle network carried 15 per cent more trips in 2005 than 2004, but insuresupermarket urges users to make sure they are covered by home insurance policies.
Richard Mason, director of price comparison company insuresupermarket, comments: "With the increasing number of bikes now on the road and more people cycling to work as an alternative to using the car or public transport, it's important to consider how well insured your bike is, just as you would when parking a car all day.
"A number of home contents insurance providers will allow you to add cycle insurance to their standard contents cover."
Insuresupermarket also asserts that other considerations to take into account are personal liability insurance and personal accident insurance, which a cyclist can claim on if he or a third party are injured.
Other advice is given to ensure a bicycle is covered by home insurance, such as a list of accessories and checking that the policy covers the full value of the equipment.
As next week is National Bike Week, more may be cycling and would be advised to be as safe as possible.
