Pet owners will need to have adequate pet health insurance if they have dogs partial to chocolate treats and easter eggs.
The insurance provider, Halifax Pet Insurance is warning dog owners to avoid feeding their pet scraps of chocolate over the Easter period, as it could have a potentially fatal effect on the animal.
Over three-quarters of vets told the insurance provider that most pet owners don't really know what they should be feeding their pets, making pet health insurance essential if the animal reacts badly to certain foods.
Last year, many veterinary surgeries reported a rise in the number of pets coming in with ailments due to being fed the wrong type of food, with some dogs even suffering the ill effects of drinking alcohol.
Worryingly, many vets also report cases where owners have tried to save money by feeding their animals human medicines such as paracetamol. This could have severe implications for an animal's health, potentially being fatal.
Ensuring you have a good dog insurance or pet health insurance could ease financial concerns of high vet bills.
To keep veterinary visits to the minimum, vets advise pet owners to keep their pet to a sensible balance diet.
"High calorie, sugar laden, pet diets can lead to dental problems, halitosis, stomach cramps and even diabetes," said Gavin Drummond from Ash Tree Veterinary Practice in Market Harborough.
It is also worth shopping around for insurance quotes for a good pet health insurance policy to cover unexpected trips to the vet.
