This year's ski season has been the worst on record for avalanches, warns the insurance company American Express.
The insurance company is urging all skiers heading to the slopes to catch the last of this year's snow to ensure their insurance policy is up to scratch.
According to an Independent on Sunday report, a total of 43 people have died in the French Alps during this winter season, compared to 25 deaths the previous year.
With fluctuating temperatures and skiers heading off-piste and skiing on fresh snow before it has had a chance to stabilise, the risk of avalanches has soared this season.
With the increased risks posed by a winter holiday, skiers could be well advised to opt for an insurance policy similar to American Express's insurance policy, which provides comprehensive winter sports insurance for skiers of all levels of expertise.
It will even cover experienced skiers and snowboarders going off-piste without a guide.
Joanne Field for the insurance company warns adventurous holidaymakers to check their travel insurance policy does include off-piste skiing.
"It is vital to compare cover when buying winter sports travel insurance, as policies can vary enormously," she said.
"Not all insurers offer off-piste cover as standard or cover search and rescue costs, which could be incurred as a result of an avalanche," she added.
Her warning is particularly aimed at the 20 per cent who will ski or snowboard without any insurance this year.
