With summer on its way, the threat of garden crime is increasing and could see the number of insurance claims rise.
Research by Churchill Home Insurance revealed that nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of homes have had their gardens and garden sheds targeted by thieves.
The insurance company says that green-fingered Brits are making their gardens a paradise for thieves, with hundreds of pounds being spent on garden furniture, plants and barbecues.
Approximately 75 per cent of Brits told the insurance company that they took pride in their gardens, revealing that it probably contained over £738 worth of goods.
However most keen gardeners don't apply the same level of security as they would with their house, with one in ten admitting they rarely lock their sheds. A third also said their gardens were easy for anyone to access.
Martin Scott from the insurance company urges gardeners to improve the security of their garden to avoid losing valuable items and having to make expensive and inconvenient insurance claims.
"It is in householder's interests to take reasonable precautions such as fitting locks to gates, sheds and outbuildings and not leaving possessions in the garden after use," he advised.
