Flood damage more than just home insurance, expert claims

Thu, 09 Nov 2006

Flood damage can cause more distress for UK residents than a home insurance claim, an expert has warned.

Although affected individuals can reclaim lost property, distress caused by incidents can have a major impact, stated Steven Ward, household manager of Allianz Cornhill.

The loss of personal belongings and damage to a home can be "deeply distressing" for Britons, even if the items are replaced under a home insurance policy, he asserted.

Additionally, Mr Ward warned homeowners to check that they have adequate home insurance cover, although the government should be acting to prevent the possibility of further problems.

"With scientists predicting that global warming will increase sea levels by 40cm in as little as 35 years, we need a comprehensive, long-term strategy to improve flood defences," he remarked.

"Tighter local authority planning rules are also needed to prevent further properties being built in areas vulnerable to flooding."

Home insurance provider More Than recently warned that some properties could soon be uninsurable if the government does not act to improve flood defences in the near future.
