Many UK holidaymakers are making claims on their travel insurance due to illness and accidents while away, according to new research.
While on holiday in Europe, almost one-third of travel insurance claims made by Brits are for health reasons, an American Express study found.
This rises to almost two-thirds in other countries such as the US, with more Britons making travel insurance claims for this type of problem.
American Express also found that the average travel insurance claim was £291.
Britons could stand to be severely out of pocket if not adequately covered by their travel insurance, with medical treatment bills of up to £10,000 for a broken leg and £15,000 for severe bronchitis, the company warns.
Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express Insurance Services, said: "There are two key things to look for when buying a good travel insurance policy to cover any potential medical claims - does the insurer ask about your health now and does the insurer offer at least £1m of medical and repatriation cover?"
Around 2.5 million Britons could have been "at risk" by holidaying without travel insurance, swiftcover.com warned earlier this year.
