Some one in five UK motorists are concentrating less than 75 per cent of the time while behind the wheel, according to new research from a car insurance provider.
Just under one in four drivers admitted to using a mobile phone while driving, while 1.2 million think about sex, the study by car insurance provider More Than found.
Motorists are also preoccupied with work and family issues, as 3.2 million and two million stated that these thoughts were on their minds.
Driving without due car and attention could invalidate a car insurance policy.
Pete Markey, head of insurance at More Than, said: "It appears that many UK drivers are preoccupied thinking about issues such as work and even affairs of the bedroom, instead of concentrating on their driving.
"This could be extremely dangerous not only to themselves but also to other motorists. We are urging drivers to give their undivided attention to the roads."
A recent study by Direct Line Car Insurance found that more than one-third of UK motorists often drive without due care and attention.
