Almost three million UK households are not protected by a home insurance policy, according to new research.
Furthermore, 5.5 million households could find that they lose out because they do not have an adequate level of home insurance cover, the Abbey study revealed.
Around 3.4 million of these are not sure whether their home insurance policy adequately covers the cost of the goods in their home, while two million are already aware that it will not
In total, just under 8.5 million households across the UK could end up losing money if they need to make a claim on their home insurance policy.
Lloyd Wilson, head of protection marketing, said: "Home insurance documents might not make for the most interesting reading but people really do need to check they have sufficient cover in place - being underinsured can end up costing people a lot of money."
Recent research from home insurance provider Legal & General revealed that many youngsters in the UK are purchasing digital goods, which is driving up the cost of the possessions in many homes.
