ABI: Travel insurance needed even for short breaks

Tue, 14 Aug 2007

Travel insurance is being recommended to all travellers by the Association of British Insurers, even if they are only going away for a couple of days.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, Malcolm Tarling, comments that travel insurance normally covers lost baggage and he claims that it is important to get travel insurance even if it is only for a weekend break .

"It doesn't take more than a couple of minutes for you to lose your bags," he remarks.

Most policies cover flight delays, cancellations and lost suitcases, he notes. Flight delays are often covered after a minimum number of hours as a result of strikes, technical problems or adverse weather, he adds.

The association also advises any holidaymakes hoping to take part in extreme sports as part of their holiday to check their travel insurance policy covers such activities.

InsureandGo has reported an increase in lost baggage claims in 2007 compared to the same period in 2006. From January to June this year 2,094 lost baggage claims have been made to the company.
