Students may need separate home insurance

Fri, 10 Aug 2007

Students are being advised to check their parent's home insurance by the British Insurance Brokers' Association.

Graeme Trudgill, a spokesperson for the British Insurance Brokers' Association, commented that although some home insurance policies may cover students living away from home, it may not cover high-value items such as laptops .

"Some of them might think they can get away without buying insurance but we know that one in three students [are] a victim of crime," he remarked.

Mr Trudgill stated that 50 per cent of students who leave for university now own a laptop or a computer and 23 per cent of the population do not have contents insurance , so it is highly possible that even a student's parents may not be covered.

He added that many students may not have had to think about home insurance before but urged them to start becoming conscious of leaving doors and unlocked and losing their possessions.

Yesterday, residents in Newport were picking up the pieces after nine homes were destroyed by a fire earlier in the week, many of whom didn't have home insurance.
