Concerns raised over bumpers

Tue, 11 Dec 2007

Motorists could find that their bumpers provide little protection and that an accident at low speed could potentially write off their vehicle, new research has revealed.

According to the Thatcham motor insurance industry research centre, crashing at 6 mph could effectively write off a certain vehicles because of the damage they sustain.

The centre claimed that as a result of the poor performance of bumpers, the UK's accident repair bills are increased by approximately £2 billion each year.

Matthew Avery, research manager at Thatcham, said that manufacturers ought to address the problem and install effective bumpers.

"Not only would it knock more than £2 billion from British bills - it would have a hugely beneficial impact on the environment with thousands of cars avoiding being written off," he commented.

In related news, car insurance provider esure recently reported that November sees the highest number of car accidents and claims .

The firm claimed that many motorists are unprepared for an accident and would not know how to act correctly.
