ABI: New flood homes could affect home insurance

Tue, 24 Jul 2007

The government has been warned to build new houses in areas that aren't prone to flooding by the Association of British Insurers.

New housing developments built in areas that could flood may affect the pricing of home insurance, the association has warned.

Nick Starling, the association's director of general insurance and health, commenting after the publication of the government's housing green paper, agreed that Britain needs new homes but only ones of the right design and in the right place.

"We need a fresh approach to house building to take account of the increasing risk of flooding and to ensure sustainable communities," he remarked.

Mr Starling added that the devastation of the floods over this summer had proved the need to plan for the future.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors also commented yesterday that when building new houses, the government must ensure there is enough funding in place "to prevent any loss to life and property".

Large amounts of money must be spent on protecting future homes from flooding according to the institute, which described the government's decision to cut funding to flood defences as "short-sighted".
