Impulse activities may be exempted from travel insurance, expert confirms

Tue, 12 Jun 2007

Standard travel insurance packages may not cover holidaymakers in the event that they get injured while taking part in an adventurous activity, a financing expert has warned.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at financing portal moneysupermarket.com, has made the claim following the publication of a new study into which impulse activities are most popular among Britons on holiday.

Cycling tops the list with 24 per cent of holidaymakers jumping on a bike without planning to do so beforehand, while 18 per cent ride horses, 11 per cent go scuba diving and nine per cent try their hand at controlling a jet ski.

"Policies can vary significantly with exclusions and caveats commonplace," remarked Mr Mason.

"You need to think about the specific activities you want insurance for as well as the level of cover you need before shopping around."

Meanwhile, a recent study from credit monitoring portal CreditExpert gave travel insurance customers an insight into how people typically fund their holiday plans.

According to the research, 27 per cent of Britons planned to use credit to pay for their trip, which may include arranging a specialist credit card deal or personal loan.
