Life insurance study highlights value of a father

Mon, 18 Jun 2007

A life insurance specialist has revealed that the average father does jobs worth an estimated value of £12,194 during his lifetime.

According to research from life insurance provider Friends Provident, dads complete handyman activities such as building extensions, cleaning u-bends and clearing drains that would have a price tag of £5,378.50 if done professionally.

Meanwhile, fathers who take their kids to school and pick them up after football practice are effectively cutting £1,996.80 off their family's taxi bill.

And the financial services provider has also suggested that many parents may already be aware of the importance of having an active father, since 54 per cent of the UK's adult male population have arranged either life insurance, income protection of critical illness cover.

"A family often see dad as just the breadwinner or walking cash machine but if dad were unable to work a family would soon realise that money doesn't grow on trees," remarked Mark Jones, protection and actuarial manager at the life insurance provider.

Depending upon the type of life insurance deal arranged, policyholders may find they are covered for a range of health problems such as contracting a debilitating virus or being struck down by cancer.
