Women lagging behind men in life insurance stakes, research shows

Thu, 29 Mar 2007

Many women may be overlooking the true importance of life insurance cover, it has been suggested.

According to analysis of applications data from insurance specialist Insurancewide.com, there is no marked difference between the number of life insurance enquiries made by men and women up to the age of 28 years old.

After this age, however, the insurance website points out that more than 65 per cent of requests registered are from males considering life insurance cover.

"Perhaps surprisingly for thirty-somethings, by far more men than women are applying for life insurance cover," commented James Harrison, chief executive of Insurancewide.com.

In addition, Mr Harrison contended that life insurance cover should not be the exclusive preserve of older people.

"We would urge people to start buying policies at an earlier age if they have debts, a mortgage and dependents," he said.

In other protection news, insurance provider Legal & General recently revealed that it handed out £92.1 million to people who made critical illness claims last year.

Delving further into the figures, the health insurance company pointed out that this was 11 per cent more than the figure paid out in 2005.
