Crash trauma affects thousands, car insurance study indicates

Tue, 29 May 2007

A new car insurance study has revealed that thousands of motorists may feel too nervous to retake the road after being involved in a crash.

According to research from motor insurance provider More Than, some 41 per cent of road users caught up in a road accident have admitted they subsequently felt anxious about getting back behind the wheel.

Moreover, two per cent of drivers did not take the wheel for six months after the incident.

And it appears that these fears are often manifested at bed-time, with 14 per cent of crash victims admitting they had dreamt about the accident since it happened.

Keith Maxwell, head of motor insurance at the car insurance company, has urged affected motorists to take their time.

"This sort of anxiety and stress can be serious and people need to take time and concentrate on feeling better," he said.

"Drivers should not feel under pressure to get behind the wheel again before they're ready."

As many car insurance customers may already be aware, it is illegal to drive on UK roads without a minimum of third party car insurance cover.
