Garden home insurance claims predicted to rise

Thu, 03 May 2007

The advent of summer is likely to see an increased number of home insurance claims relating to theft and vandalism of garden contents, according to one insurance professional.

Robin Bailey, insurance director at Nationwide Building Society, has made the prediction while pointing out that a number of home insurance providers refuse to cover items located outside the property.

And Mr Bailey urged homeowners to shop around to ensure they find a comprehensive home insurance provider that can cover all their possessions.

"Unfortunately, we cannot secure our gardens as easily as our homes," he said.

"We understand that customers want more from their insurance provider, which is why our home insurance includes up to £1,000 of cover for garden contents."

Meanwhile, the home insurance specialist has also revealed what garden items tend to account for the largest number of claims.

According to internal data from the financial services provider, home insurance policyholders register more claims for garden furniture damage than anything else, followed by bicycles and ornaments.

As one of the UK's largest home insurance providers, Nationwide Building Society competes in the same market as financing institutions such as Skipton Building Society and Britannia Building Society.
