Insurance firm finds Brits are unwilling to switch off

Thu, 24 May 2007

While most British employees are looking forward to the forthcoming bank holiday, a survey by insurance provider swiftcover.com has revealed that many refuse to switch off during down-time.

According to the insurance firm, many Britons pack their mobiles and Blackberries when going on holiday, leading to 64 per cent claiming they need another break after returning from vacation.

Remaining in touch with the office while on holiday was cited by nine per cent of Britons as the main reason for taking their telecoms gadgets with them on holiday.

Some 14 per cent even lug their laptop with them on holiday, risking having to make an insurance claim for damage or theft.

Commenting on the trend swiftcover.com director of underwriting Craig Staniland said Brits seemingly "can't face missing out on the latest office or social gossip".

He added that this is likely to be fuelled by the availability of "smarter and slicker technology".

Britons now take hundreds of pounds worth of gadgets away with them on holiday, meaning that vacations are becoming less restful.

However, those who just cannot board a plane without their technology, should ensure they have adequate insurance in place to cover all risks.

A separate survey by insurance provider More Than showed last year that British workers often decide to take a holiday on the spur of the moment.

However, the head of travel insurance for the firm, Keira Clark, warned last-minute holidaymakers not to forget to take out travel insurance in their 11th hour foreign jaunts.
