Pet insurance 'claims to rise in summer'

Wed, 23 May 2007

Summer is set to see an increase in pet insurance claims, according to a spokesperson for Tesco Personal Finance.

Monica McCormack said that sunny weather brings with it a rise in pet insurance claims, as pet owners and their four-legged friends spend more time outdoors.

She explained that because animals are out and about more, there are more instances of bites, vomiting and foreign items that they swallow or get stuck in their ears - which result in a trip to the vets and a subsequent pet insurance claim.

Ms McCormack added that the pet insurance provider sees an increase of animals involved in road traffic accidents.

This happens particularly when people are away on holiday or during weekends, she added.

Cat owners should also take precautions in the warmer months, according to Ms McCormack.

"Cats with white or sparse ear tips are prone to certain types of cancer, so you need to use a sunscreen on their ear tips to stop them getting sunburnt," she warned.

Other insurance products offered by Tesco Personal Finance include car insurance, travel insurance, health insurance and life insurance.
