Travel insurance advocated following lost luggage research

Tue, 08 May 2007

A new study from a travel insurance provider has underlined how common it is for people to lose luggage at the airport.

According to research from insurance specialist swiftcover.com, 22 per cent of people have encountered a situation whereby their suitcases do not appear on the baggage carousels.

Of this group, 55 per cent were left waiting more than 24 hours for their personal belongings to be found, while six per cent did not receive them at all while on vacation.

Following the findings, Craig Stanilard, director of underwriting at the travel insurance provider, has highlighted the value of a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

"It's never been more important to take out travel insurance," he said.

"As long as you have adequate travel insurance, losing your suitcase should not hit you in the pocket."

Depending on the insurance policy arranged, holidaymakers can set off safe in the knowledge they will be protected for a wide range of mishaps abroad.

For instance, some winter sports travel insurance policies offer compensation if a piste is closed due to lack of snow or if an injured sports enthusiast is in need of medical attention overseas.
