Many drivers are failing to carry out basic checks and maintenance on their cars, according to new research.
A study by car insurance provider LV= found that 55 per cent of motorists do not check that their windscreens are clean before they set off, while 84 per cent do not look to see if they have adequate screen wash .
The firm also noted that 63 per cent do not make sure that their wing mirrors are clean and a further 81 per cent fail to check their headlights .
Emma Holyer, motor spokesperson for LV=, said: "Making sure that your windscreen, lights and mirrors are clean before setting off on a journey should be second nature to motorists."
However, despite motorists being required to do so by law, for many people this is not the case, she added.
In related news, Churchill recently reported that 42 per cent of motorists who do not get behind the wheel regularly admitted that the standard of their driving is affected the next time they make a journey .
