People are being advised to make sure that they do not forget the contents of their garage when they review their home insurance policies.
According to Legal &General, research by the RAC Foundation discovered that approximately 60 per cent of households do not use their garage to store their cars .
Instead, many people choose to keep their barbeques , outdoor furniture and DIY items, the value of which may not be fully covered by standard home insurance policies .
Ruth Wilkins, head of communications for Legal &General's general insurance business, said: "Garages and outbuildings are great for storing items but it is vital to check that house insurance provides adequate cover for your belongings."
It is also important to ensure that garages are "secure" and that other measures are taken to deter thieves, such as security lights and strong locks.
In related news, research by Sainsbury's Bank revealed that 26 per cent of homeowners did not obtain additional quotes when they last renewed their home insurance policies.
