Car insurance firms advertising themselves as 'women-only' may not offer the cheapest premiums, according to a new report.
Moneysupermarket.com claimed that a 30-year-old woman driving a Ford Focus is likely to obtain a quote of £233 from the least expensive women-only insurer .
However, Swiftcover would offer a quote approximately 30 per cent lower on average, the firm noted.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said that it is still sensible to "shop around" for car insurance, despite specialist insurers claiming to meet the specific needs of female motorists.
"Some specialist insurers do offer extra benefits, such as handbag cover, half-price MOT or free mobile phone and connection, but women should not be swayed by female-friendly adverts for cheaper car insurance," Mr Mason remarked.
An earlier study by MoneyExpert.com revealed that the top four annual insurance quotes from women-only firms cost on average £72 more than premiums offered by general insurance companies .
Sean Gardner, chief executive of the firm, warned that female consumers could be "ruling out" the largest insurance providers when choosing specialist firms.
