An expert at a car insurance company has claimed that drivers should be allowed to have experience on motorways before they are able to take the wheel without supervision.
John O'Roarke of car insurance firm LV= has urged the government to take action in this regard, with motorways a dangerous environment for inexperienced motorists to face without prior training.
According to research revealed by the car insurance expert, 88 per cent of drivers believe that motorways should be incorporated into a standard driving test, with just nine per cent claiming current conditions are adequate.
"It is clear that British motorists believe novice drivers are failed by the current system," said Mr O'Roarke.
"It is ridiculous that newly licensed drivers are left to teach themselves the skills needed to drive safely on Britain's busiest roads."
Further data from the car insurance provider revealed that 26 per cent of the UK's drivers believe inexperienced motorists should not be allowed to travel on motorways if they fail a test unit on these roads.
Not being able to drive on motorways, which include the M6 and M25, could mean much slower journeys for these drivers.
