A significant number of motorists are unaware of some of the new safety rules outlined by the latest edition of the Highway Code, it has been claimed.
Research by Churchill Car Insurance found that 37 per cent of drivers surveyed were unaware changes had been made.
The firm noted that there was some confusion among motorists whether certain activities, such as playing music at high volume or wearing unsuitable footwear are included in the new code.
Abi Clark, spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance, said: "Drivers need to make sure that they know all the current rules of the Highway Code, otherwise they could find they are inadvertently breaking the rules."
Launching the new code recently, road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said that everyone ought to have a copy of the code as it is a "crucial tool" and motorists should ensure that their knowledge remains "up to date".
