Nick Dear, a spokesperson for More Than, explained that the rise in the popularity of the car insurance was linked, in part, to the increase in the number of hybrid cars on the road.
He said: "Obviously there's more people driving and looking for these kinds of insurance policies .
"Having said that, hopefully it influences, informs and helps people to choose their insurance products."
Mr Dear added that 22 million drivers would consider switching to a hybrid car if they were cheaper to run than a normal car and if eco-friendly car insurance is less expensive, then this might help them make the change.
However, a Moneysupermarket.com report found that some green car insurance policies can cost up to 44 per cent more than a standard car insurance policy.
