Pet mad Brits insure animals rather than themselves

Fri, 22 Aug 2008

More people in Britain have taken out health insurance policies for their pets than for themselves, according to new research by Tesco .

The study found that there are almost twice as many policies for animals than for people and that last year, while 23 per cent of British pets were insured, only 12.2 per cent of the population had private medical insurance .

Tesco is now giving customers a 20 per cent online discount for pet insurance and another five per cent off if there is more than one pet being insured. Allan Burns, head of Tesco pet insurance, commented that he was not surprised by the findings. He said: "We have known for a long time that us Brits are pet mad."

Melanie Matthews, of Halifax Pet Insurance, recently told the Times Newspaper that people taking a pet abroad should take their policy documents with them in case they need to make a claim .
