Car insurance claims increase at Christmas due to 'Grinch' attacks

Thu, 04 Dec 2008

There will be an increase in the number of car insurance claims made at Christmas due to a spate of "Grinch-style" car break-ins.

Insurance provider the AA, has revealed that claims rise by ten per cent in December and January, partly due to these thefts. The "Grinch" attacks occur when Christmas shoppers leave gifts in the car while going from place to place. Thieves, attracted by the valuables, then break in to steal the gifts.

AA Insurance director Simon Douglas said: "We''re urging shoppers to be extra vigilant when doing last minute shopping to make sure they are not inviting thieves, for whom the season is about anything but goodwill. By taking extra care about how and where you park and not leaving valuable items on display you can greatly reduce the risk of falling prey to Grinch-style thieves who will not hesitate to steal your Christmas."

Police statistics show that car thefts in Britain currently occur at a rate of one every 13 seconds.
