House fires increase in winter months says home insurer

Fri, 05 Dec 2008

British householders are more at risk of suffering a house fire in the winter months, says home insurer Direct Line .

The insurer monitored fire claims between September 2007 and August 2008 and found that there were less fires on average in the summertime than any other season. The number of fires in the home rose steadily in the autumn months with an average increase of 25 per cent compared to the summertime and peaked in the winter with an average 50 per cent more.

An increase in house fires in winter can be attributed to several factors and these include faulty Christmas lighting and decorations, as well as the rise in popularity and use of candles and oil burners around the home as an aesthetic design feature. Also, faulty or misused household appliances such as electric heaters, electric blankets and cookware are used more often in the winter.
