Watch out for frosting, car insurance manager warns

Mon, 04 Feb 2008

Winter is a dangerous time for cars, with severe weather and plunging temperatures increasing the risk of accidents and meaning drivers have to keep on top of maintenance even more so than in the summer.

According to the car insurance manager at Sainsbury’s Bank, Joanne Mallon, cold weather isn’t the only thing motorists have to watch out for. A practice known as frosting is becoming more common, when thieves steal a vehicle as it warms up in the driveway.

Mallon reportedly commented that as many as 66,000 motorists fall victim to this type of crime every year. She reportedly commented: "When it's freezing outside it can be tempting to leave the engine running to speed up the defrosting process while you nip back inside to get ready. But this can have terrible consequences if your car gets stolen."
