Cold weather poses insurance risk

Tue, 08 Jan 2008

Severe winter weather can hit both your home and car, according to insurance company More Than.

It says that motorists are 50 per cent more likely to breakdown in the first three months of the year and advises drivers to be prepared.

More Than also warns people not to leave their cars unattended when warming them up, saying that opportunist thieves pray on such vehicles, something that would leave you having to make a claim on your car insurance .

The company also says that it is important to keep the central heating running in your house in order to avoid the possibility of a burst pipe and a subsequent claim on your home insurance .

It also suggests leaving your insurance details with a neighbour if you have to leave your house empty for a period.

Last week large areas of the UK were hit by snow falls, high winds and sub-zero temperatures.

The wintry weather caused problems on the roads and the Highway Agency recommended drives pack extra clothing in case of breakdowns.
